Our Story
Skoon™ Laundromats, Cape Town
A simple idea, carefully built.
Skoon™ Laundromats began with a bobotie-stained restaurant napkin in 2018. Over a meal in Cape Town, Matthew and Carl wrote down an idea: “Do laundry the way mom used to.” What began as a plan for a small laundromat became a commitment to care for clothes—and the people who wear them—with attention and warmth.
Matthew came from sound engineering; Carl brought experience in hotel management and film production. In 2020, they helped transform a Cape Town hotel into a self-isolation facility. That work strengthened their belief in careful procedures, hygiene and clear communication. They spent the following years visiting laundromats, studying the work and looking for the right place to build their own. They registered Laundry Collection (Pty) Ltd in 2022 and opened their first laundromat at Portside, 4 Bree Street, in November 2023.
The business adopted the Skoon™ Laundromats name in October 2024. A second store followed at Foreshore, 15 Lower Long Street, in March 2026.
Today, Skoon is an owner-operated, full-service laundromat for Cape Town residents and travellers. Across its two stores, the team offers wash, dry and fold, ironing, dry cleaning, sneaker care, and collection and delivery from nearby hotels, Airbnbs, homes and offices. Personal customers’ laundry is kept separate from other customers’ orders. Garments are checked, additional work is discussed before processing, and customers are kept informed until their laundry is returned.
Franchising remains part of Matthew and Carl’s future plans. At Portside and Foreshore, their focus remains on the promise that began on a napkin: laundry done right.
